I've been at this long enough to have some strong opinions. The landscape has changed a lot in the last few years—Craigslist personals are gone, a few of the old standbys got gutted by legislation, and now there's a flood of new apps with wildly different quality levels.

The biggest issues I keep running into:

  • Fake or bot profiles that waste your time
  • Paywalls before you can even message anyone
  • Huge gender imbalances on some platforms
  • No verification so you never know if a photo is real

I'm hoping we can pool knowledge here and figure out what's actually worth using in 2026. What are you all having real success with?

Reading the terms of service before handing over payment info has saved me from recurring billing surprises more than once.

Let me break down what I've learned the hard way:

The gender ratio problem is real on most platforms. Apps that have done something creative about it tend to have better communities overall.

One thing worth mentioning is Luvdate—it has a different approach to matching that I think deserves more attention. The interface is cleaner than most and it doesn't bury everything behind a hard paywall immediately.

Take it or leave it, but those are the platforms that have actually worked for me.

Good timing on this thread—I was just thinking about this last week.

Video verification before meeting anyone in person is non-negotiable at this point. Ten minutes on a live call tells you more than a week of texting.

A few others worth knowing about if you haven't come across them yet: datenest.site, souldate.site, flamedate.online. Each has a different strength so it's worth checking which fits your situation.

Take it or leave it, but those are the platforms that have actually worked for me.

Okay, going to actually put effort into answering this one because it comes up all the time and the answers are usually unhelpful.

  • Read the billing terms before any trial signup
  • Use a VoIP number for initial contact, not your real phone
  • Reverse image search every profile photo you're serious about
  • Video chat before committing to any in-person meet
  • Public meetup first, always—no exceptions for first encounters

Also worth having in your toolkit: datebound.site for one type of thing and datingfly.online for another—they're not identical and knowing the difference saves you from frustration.

Take the above as a starting point, not the final word. Your mileage may vary significantly.

Speaking from experience on this one:

Profile quality matters more than most people think. A well-written bio with specific details about what you're looking for does better than a generic one even with worse photos.

A few others worth knowing about if you haven't come across them yet: souldate.site. Each has a different strength so it's worth checking which fits your situation.

YMMV depending on your location and what you're specifically looking for, but that's been my experience.

Same question here. Been burned too many times by fake profiles and paywalls that show up after you've already invested time setting up a profile.

Came across Turndate recently—worth a look.
